Belgian Overseas Territories in Africa
Belgium no longer has any overseas territories in Africa
but at one time they had a territory known as the Belgian
Congo, which earlier was a private property of the King of
Belgium known as the Belgian Free State. Today that
territory includes the independent countries of Burundi,
the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire),
and Rwanda.
British Overseas Territories in Africa
Today there is only one British overseas territory in Africa,
the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, which includes
Saint Helena Island, Ascension Island, and a group of islands
known as the Tristan da Cunha Islands.
French Overseas Territories in Africa
There are two French overseas territories in Africa today,
and both of them are islands in the Indian Ocean. One is the
island of Reunion off the coast of Madagascar and the other
is the Mayotte Island group in the Mozambique Channel
German Overseas Territories in Africa
Germany's overseas territories included German Kamerun,
German East Africa, German South-West Africa, and German
Togoland. Today those territories are now the independent
African countries of Cameroon, Tanzania, Namibia, and Togo.
Italian Overseas Territories in Africa
Former Italian overseas territories in Africa included
Italian North Africa, Eritrea, and Italian Somaliland.
Today those territories are the independent countries of
Libya, Eritrea, and Somalia.
Portuguese Overseas Territories in Africa
There are no longer any Portuguese overseas territories
in Africa but at one time Portugal had four: Portuguese
West Africa, Portuguese East Africa, Portuguese, Guinea,
and the Cape Verde Islands. Today those territories are the
independent countries of Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau,
and Cape Verde.
Spanish Overseas Territories in Africa
At one time Spain had three overseas territories in Africa:
Spanish Sahara, Spanish Morocco, and Spanish Guinea. Today
those territories are the independent countries of Western
Sahara and Equatorial Guinea.
