Tromelin Island in Africa

Tromelin Island is a low, flat, sandy, uninhabited island off the southeast coast of Africa that is about one square kilometer in size. Tromelin is unhabited except for visiting scientists and it is the home of meteorological station used for forecasting cyclones. it is a nature reserve protection the sea turtle and it has been declared an "Important Bird Area" by the BirdLife International organization.

Tromelin island is located in the Indian Ocean, about 220 miles east of Northern Madagascar Island and north of Mauritius Island and Reunion Island It is part of a group of French-administered islands known collectively as Iles Esparses

Who Governs Tromelin Island?
Tromelin was first explored by the French in 1776 and it came under the jurisdiction of Reunion in 1814. It has been administered as a French overseas territory since the 1950's but Mauritius and the Seychelles Islands also claim Tromelin.
